A Quick Guide To Perfume Shopping: Cologne, Eau De Toilette, Eau De Parfum & Parfum

Ever wonder why some fragrances don’t linger on your skin longer than you were expecting? If you are quite baffled why your friend wearing the same perfume brand lasts the whole day while yours dissipates in just a couple of hours even after lavishly spritzing the bottle on your whole body, you need to look into the acronyms EDT or EDP.  

Learning the basics can get you a long way and guide you towards scoring the right perfume for each occasion. Which type should you wear during a casual stroll in the park? Or during a quick foray into the grocery?  Which one should you use on a night out with friends? Or when you are going on a date with your special someone? You need to know which type you should wear depending on the event or your mood.  You would not want to be remembered as that person who wears too much (or sometimes too little!) perfume. You want just the right amount that works for you. In this article, we are throwing a rundown on the difference among the fragrance classifications that you should be acquainted with. 

1. Parfum.  A French word for Perfume, Parfum contains the highest level of fragrance concentration of essential oils that render the scent work practically from sun up to sun down which also explains its hefty price tag. 

The higher the oil concentration, the longer it stays on your skin. It also has less alcohol content which makes it most suitable for those who are bothered by their sensitive skin that a lot of perfumes dry out. You can be confident that the scent will last for about six to eight hours on your skin.

2. Eau de Parfum (EDP). If the oil concentration in Parfum alone is regarded to be more than 20%, EDP or Eau de Parfum plays somewhere around 15%-20%. You can opt for EDP if you are looking for a less expensive type but with a relatively long staying power.

It is safe to say then that EDP fragrances such as Chloe Signature Eau De Parfum won’t wither in the next four to five hours of wearing it. It is the next best choice after Parfum and while its longevity is shorter, it is relatively less expensive but still deemed as reliable for a good number of hours.

3. Eau de Toilette (EDT). For those who might probably doubt the authenticity of a particular brand of fragrance they just bought because it gets dispelled easily and quintessentially stays for about 3 hours only, check the packaging one more time if it bluntly says EDT or Eau de Toilette. That is supposed to account for that big question mark in your head. 

If you find perfumes with higher fragrance concentration still a tad overwhelming, you can choose to wear Eau de Toilette (EDT) which has a concentration of 5% to 15%. It is a more popular type of scent and is best used during daytime, like when you are headed to work or you make a trip to the mall for shopping. If you want to sustain the fragrance you are wearing, though, you might want to bring a bottle with you as it only lasts for two to three hours.

4. Cologne.  This is probably the term we have grown accustomed to since childhood for something in liquid form that gives off a fresh and nice smelling scent.
